Scientists recorded about 27 million metric tons of sargassum in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico in July 2026, with the algae reaching record levels in the Caribbean in June. The Mexican government estimates that up to 9,000 tons can wash ashore on its Caribbean coastline on the worst days, while current collection capacity is roughly 1,200 tons per day.

To address the surge, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an investment of more than 2 trillion pesos (about $115 million) to expand the national sargassum strategy. The plan aims to raise marine‑collection capacity to 1,870 tons daily in 2026 and to 4,000 tons daily in 2027 by acquiring sargaceros, tugboats, coastal barriers and other equipment. Hotels across the Caribbean have cut rates and are spending an estimated $130 million annually to clear the seaweed, while Mexico reported collecting 96,151 metric tons of sargassum in 2026, up from 92,783 tons in 2025.
