Mexico's Conapesca seizes 462 tonnes of illegal fish in June
In June 2026 the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) reported the precautionary retention of 462,550 kg of illegal fish product across 19 Mexican states. The figure resulted from 236 inspection acts, 1,137 verifications, 1,216 land patrols and 236 water patrols carried out by federal fisheries officials.
The operation also led to the seizure of 1,436 fishing gear items, 24 vehicles, 17 small vessels, nine outboard motors and the arrest of three individuals, all of whom were handed over to the Public Ministry for violations of the General Law on Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries (LGPAS). The affected states include Baja California, Baja California Sur, Colima, Mexico City, Guerrero, Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Sonora, Veracruz and Yucatán.
Conapesca maintains a 24‑hour hotline (669 915 6913) and an online reporting platform to receive citizen complaints. The large seizure highlights ongoing challenges in monitoring distribution chains for seafood and underscores the government's effort to combat illegal fishing, protect marine resources and ensure compliance with national fisheries regulations.
