Mexico's Conapesca imposes new fishing bans and opens aquaculture grant applications

The National Commission for Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca) announced that, effective 00:00 UTC on 1 August, a series of fishing bans will begin in Mexican waters. The restrictions cover species such as abalone, langostino, octopus, various shark species and all fish in the Dique La Primavera, with specific geographic limits ranging from Baja California Sur to the Veracruz reef system. The bans are set to run through late 2026, aiming to protect commercially important fish populations and sustain local livelihoods.

Conapesca also opened registration windows from 3 to 14 August for the 2026 Genetic Resources Component, a grant program that will provide up to 90,000 pesos per beneficiary for improved genetic stock of tilapia, trout, carp, catfish, oyster or shrimp. Applications must be submitted in person at Conapesca offices in Mazatlán and other state offices, accompanied by required documentation such as official ID, tax status and proof of land or water use.
