Mexico's COPRED and CODHEM address historic discrimination and alleged women’s assault

The Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination (COPRED) of Mexico City warned that public narratives that uncritically celebrate colonisation, conquest and the subjugation of Indigenous peoples ignore structural racial and cultural violence. It called for inclusive, critical historical accounts in public, cultural and political spaces, aligned with democratic, intercultural and non‑discrimination principles.

The State of Mexico’s Human Rights Commission (CODHEM) opened an investigation after reports that two women were allegedly removed from the Temoaya municipal police station and assaulted by local residents. The incident is linked to rumors about contamination of a water spring and alleged ritual practices. CODHEM’s probe focuses on possible failings by municipal security authorities to protect detainees and on violations of legal security and personal integrity.
