Mexico's CRT Extends Mobile Line Registration Deadline
The Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT) issued a new amendment to the guidelines for identifying mobile telephone lines, extending the registration deadline by 184 days. The deadline will now be applied gradually according to the last digit of each number, starting on 15 August 2026 for numbers ending in 0 and ending on 31 December 2026 for numbers ending in 9. After the applicable date, service providers must suspend unregistered lines within 72 hours.
Operators are required to send SMS alerts to unregistered lines twice a week while the line remains unlinked, and daily during the final seven days before each deadline. A final notice will inform users that their service will be cut off within 72 hours if registration is not completed.
The new rules also introduce a mandatory “proof‑of‑life” verification for users who register in person. The process may involve a selfie, a short video, or facial‑match comparison with official ID to confirm the registrant’s identity. This adds a layer of identity validation that was previously omitted in digital registrations.
