Mexico's CRT mandates Telmex expansion and proposes new infrastructure rules

Mexico’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) has issued new mandates to Teléfonos de México (Telmex) and its subsidiary Teléfonos del Noroeste (Telnor) to expand internet access. The order requires the companies to install 100 connection points to support small local providers in 501 locations, serving over 130,000 people. Additionally, they must provide fiber optic internet to 60 localities inhabited by more than 140,000 people, offering a social tariff of 200 pesos per month with speeds up to 70 Mbps.

In a separate effort to boost the sector, the CRT is proposing a National Digital Window for Telecommunications and Broadcasting. This initiative aims to streamline the deployment of infrastructure by reducing the time required for state and municipal procedures, which currently averages 1.4 years. The CRT estimates that simplifying these processes could trigger approximately 13,000 million pesos in additional investment, with a multiplier effect of nearly 2,000 million pesos.
