Argentina and Mexico face fiscal and infrastructure disputes
In Argentina, a political dispute has emerged regarding the management of road infrastructure funds. Gabriel Katopodis, the Minister of Infrastructure for Buenos Aires province, testified before the Chamber of Deputies, alleging that the national government is diverting resources from the fuel tax. He stated that while the tax has increased by over 1200% in nearly three years, 1.5 trillion pesos collected since December 2023 have not been used for road maintenance as required by law. Katopodis argued that this practice forces citizens to 'pay twice' for road repairs. In response, presidential spokesperson Adrián Ravier denied any misappropriation of funds, asserting that resources are being managed efficiently to preserve their value amidst high inflation.
Simultaneously, in Mexico, the Mexican Institute of Financial Executives (IMEF) has raised alarms regarding the country's rising public debt. IMEF President Gabriela Gutiérrez Mora warned that due to slow economic growth, the gross public sector debt could reach 60% of GDP this year, significantly higher than the 52% projected by the government. The institute noted that public debt reached 20.3 trillion pesos in June, more than double the level recorded in December 2018.
