Mexico's Education Ministry Sets 2026‑27 School Calendar and Expands High‑School Capacity

The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) announced that it will guarantee enough high‑school places for the 2026‑27 school year in Baja California Sur, adding five new campuses. Three will host the Nacional Margarita Maza high school, while a new CETMAR in San José del Cabo will accommodate 800 students and a CBETIS site in Cabo San Lucas will start with three morning groups for 150 pupils.

SEP also released a provisional schedule for the 2026‑27 academic year. Classes are slated to begin on 31 August 2026 and run for 185 effective days, with the semester expected to end between 14‑15 July 2027. The draft outlines winter vacation (late December to early January), Easter break (21‑28 March 2027), and other instructional pauses that affect families, schools, tourism and commerce.

Separately, in Coahuila’s southeast region, schools reported absenteeism rates above 50 percent after final exams, with some pre‑school and primary groups seeing attendance fall to 10‑15 of 35 students. Lawmaker Magaly Hernández called for the school calendar to be aligned with evaluation dates, arguing that extending classes to mid‑July is unnecessary when grading concludes in mid‑June. Education secretary Emanuel Garza Fishburn urged parents to keep children in school through the official end of the cycle on 15 July.
