Mexico's Electoral Tribunal revokes dismissal of complaint against CNDH
The Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) has unanimously revoked a decision that had declined to initiate a sanctioning procedure against the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). The ruling overturns a previous determination by the National Electoral Institute (INE) which had closed a complaint filed by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
The dispute stems from a CNDH promotional campaign for the series ‘Los Años Heridos,’ which referenced political violence, repression, and censorship during PRI administrations. While the PRI alleged calumny and improper use of institutional resources for electoral influence, the INE's technical unit had previously dismissed the case, arguing the content was historical and informative.
The Superior Chamber found that the previous analysis was incomplete, noting that the technical unit focused too narrowly on the issue of calumny while failing to independently assess the potential for electoral influence through the use of public resources.
