Mexico's Federal Honey Support Program Criticized by Beekeepers
The Mexican federal government has launched a new assistance scheme for honey producers, providing equipment such as boxes, queen bees with improved genetics, de‑waxers and extractors. Beekeeper José Manuel Estrada argues that the program’s requirements – notably the need to have a formally registered Rural Production Unit – exclude most small‑scale, backyard apiculturists who keep only a handful of hives.
Estrada says many producers operate informally, tending the colonies once a month as a supplementary income, and the paperwork prevents them from receiving aid. He calls for more flexible eligibility criteria and local enrollment points so that the resources reach the intended beneficiaries. Estrada also highlighted the strategic importance of beekeeping for pollinating crops such as chayote, coffee and lemon, noting that without adequate support, pollination – and thus agricultural yields – could suffer.
While acknowledging the positive intent of the initiative, Estrada concluded that without adjustments the program remains a “partial attempt” that fails to address the real needs of Mexico’s rural beekeeping sector.
