Mexico Finance Secretary defends economic stability and 2027 budget

Mexican Secretary of Finance Édgar Amador Zamora appeared before the Chamber of Deputies to present the 2027 Economic Package and discuss the Second Government Report. During the session, Amador defended the nation's fiscal stability and economic resilience, noting that the GDP grew by 2.1% in the second quarter of 2026 and the Global Indicator of Economic Activity rose by 3.4% in July.

Addressing public debt, Amador stated that the debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to stabilize around 56%. He emphasized that 80% of the federal debt is denominated in national currency at fixed rates, reducing exposure to exchange rate volatility. He also highlighted that stabilization funds have reached their highest level since 2020, exceeding 170 billion pesos.

The hearing included sharp political exchanges. Opposition legislators questioned the government regarding fuel smuggling (huachicol fiscal), transparency in financial intelligence, and the management of Pemex. Amador responded by labeling fuel smuggling as a “cancer for public finances” and defended the government's ability to maintain growth without deep fiscal reforms. Additionally, the Digital Economy Law was approved in commission to increase the traceability of transactions and reduce cash usage.
