Mexico's footballers set for European club season as team eyes World Cup 2030 challenges

A number of Mexican internationals will feature in top European leagues for the 2026‑27 season. Striker Raúl Jiménez joins Wolverhampton in England's Championship, while defender Edson Álvarez returns to West Ham, also in the Championship. Other players confirmed for European clubs include Álvaro Fidalgo at Real Betis (LaLiga), Obed Vargas at Atlético Madrid (LaLiga), Johan Vásquez at Genoa (Serie A), Santiago Giménez at AC Milan (Serie A), César Montes at Lokomotiv Moscow (Russian Premier League) and Luis Chávez with Dinamo Copenhagen (Denmark). The moves illustrate Mexico's continued export of talent to the continent's major competitions.

At the same time, the Mexican national team is planning for the next World Cup cycle. After reaching the round of 16 at the 2026 tournament, the federation identified several objectives for 2030: consolidating a new generation of players such as Gilberto Mora, Mateo Chávez and Obed Vargas, securing qualification through the CONCACAF qualifiers, and preparing for a possible expansion of the tournament to 64 teams. Head coach Javier Aguirre emphasized the need for more frequent matches against elite European sides and a sustained development project to break the long‑standing barrier of the round of 16.
