Mexico's Foreign Ministry warns of passport appointment fraud sites

The Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has alerted citizens that fraudulent websites are imitating its official passport appointment portal. Victims are redirected to cloned sites that replicate the design and forms of the genuine SRE platform, then asked to make payments via bank transfers or convenience‑store codes, resulting in significant financial losses.

SRE clarified that it never requests payments to personal accounts or through convenience stores. Official payments must be made only at authorized bank windows or through personal electronic banking. The agency emphasized, “Realiza previamente el pago de derechos en ventanilla bancaria o a través de banca electrónica. IMPORTANTE: No pagues tu pasaporte en tiendas de conveniencia ni realices depósitos en cuentas bancarias personales.”

The only legitimate portals for scheduling passport appointments nationwide are www.citas.sre.gob.mx and www.gob.mx. Users are urged to verify the domain, avoid sponsored links, and report any suspicious sites to the public prosecutor.
