Mexico reports 152,000 consular cases and legal action over ICE deaths

Mexico's Foreign Minister, Roberto Velasco, has reported significant developments in bilateral relations with the United States, focusing on consular protection, migration, and security. Between September 2025 and June 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) handled over 152,000 consular protection cases, a 21.4 percent increase from the previous period.

Velasco highlighted a critical issue regarding the deaths of 17 Mexican nationals while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In response, the Mexican government has initiated twenty legal actions involving state and county prosecutors, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice.

Regarding migration, the 'México te Abraza' strategy facilitated the repatriation of 262,595 citizens between January 2025 and July 2026, with the majority returning via land. Velasco also noted that irregular migrant encounters at the border have decreased by 97 percent compared to the 2023 peak.

On the security front, cooperation continues through the North American Command. Recent efforts under the National Security Strategy have led to the seizure of 518 tons of drugs and 32,000 firearms. Velasco emphasized that Mexico's approach is guided by principles of sovereignty, shared responsibility, and cooperation without subordination.
