Mexico's governments suppress families of missing persons protests in Puebla

State authorities in Puebla, led by Governor Alejandro Armenta and Public Security Secretary Francisco Sánchez, minimized the police response to peaceful demonstrations by "madres buscadoras"—families searching for missing relatives. The protesters reported being chased, shoved and surrounded by police while demanding respect and spaces to publicize their cases.

At the federal level, President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration, through Secretary of Governance Rosa Icela Rodríguez, announced an investigation into the protests, claiming some participants, particularly groups from Jalisco, received external financing and logistical support. Federal officials characterized the demonstrations as influenced by "foreign intentions" and downplayed their impact, stating that security personnel outnumbered the demonstrators on the streets.
