Mexico's CNDH Exonerates Army in Ayotzinapa Case

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) issued Recommendation 208VG/2026, formally clearing the Mexican army of institutional responsibility for the 2014 disappearance of 43 normal‑school students from Ayotzinapa. The 867‑page report characterises earlier investigations by the GIEI and Covaj as an “Anti‑Verdad Histórica” and limits accountability to individual conduct, excluding the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) from reparations. The resolution redirects reparative measures to civil, state and municipal authorities and has triggered protests from families and human‑rights groups who view it as a setback in the search for justice. The CNDH also called for continued monitoring of victim assistance, removal of revictimising imagery, and human‑rights training for police forces in Guerrero.
