Mexico's IMCO reports top‑paid careers and high female informality in Yucatán

The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) released its annual employment indicators, highlighting that careers linked to technology, specialized engineering and medical sciences command the highest average monthly salaries in the country, often double the national average. Construction‑related professions such as architecture and engineering also rank among the best‑paid, while humanities and initial teacher‑training fields remain at the low end of the wage scale. The report notes persistent gender gaps, with women under‑represented in STEM disciplines and limited access to senior positions.

In a separate gender‑focused index, IMCO found that 62.7% of employed women in the state of Yucatán work in the informal sector, placing the state 22nd out of 32 Mexican entities for female informality. Despite this, Yucatán rose to fourth place nationally in the overall gender‑index score (63.8/100), reflecting strengths such as lower unpaid‑work disparity, high perceived safety on public transport, and relatively low homicide rates against women. However, only 13.3% of female entrepreneurs operate formally, underscoring ongoing obstacles to economic autonomy for women.
