Mexico's IMPI accelerates patent processing and updates industrial property deadlines

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has implemented measures to accelerate the protection of inventions and streamline administrative processes. During the second quarter of 2026, IMPI granted 481 patents in Mexico and a total of 6,540 patents to inventors globally. To address previous delays, the institute has incorporated 500 new examiners and reported a 35% reduction in average resolution times, alongside an 80% decrease in certain procedures related to patents and utility models.

Additionally, new regulations published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on September 4, 2026, have modified response deadlines for various industrial property procedures. These changes primarily affect denominations of origin and geographical indications. For instance, the first response period for the authorization or renewal of national denominations of origin is now set at 30 business days, while requests for accreditation as a legal entity responsible for certifying geographical indications will have a 45-business-day response window.
