Mexico's IMPI caps World Cup 2026 fines at 500,000 pesos for illegal broadcasts
The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) announced that establishments that illegally retransmit FIFA World Cup 2026 matches may be fined up to 500,000 pesos, correcting earlier reports that suggested penalties could reach 29 million pesos. The agency clarified that the higher sanction scale applies only to severe commercial violations involving FIFA trademarks, not to the broadcast of matches.
IMPI warned bars, restaurants, hotels and other venues to obtain proper licensing from FIFA rights‑holders and to avoid using protected logos, mascots, slogans or other trademarked elements. Violations could also lead to temporary closures of up to 90 days and seizure of illegal advertising. The authority will conduct nationwide inspections throughout the tournament, which will be co‑hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
