Mexico's INE approves 2027 operating budget and starts issuing redesigned voting credentials

The National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico outlined its 2027 base operating budget at 3.948 billion pesos, after adjusting an initial 4.361 billion‑peso estimate. The calculation uses a 3 % inflation forecast and an exchange rate of 18.60 pesos per US dollar, and covers only core operational costs, excluding personnel, party prerogatives, project funding and contingency reserves.

On 1 June 2026 the INE began national production of a new Credencial para Votar. The redesigned card adds advanced security elements such as an optically variable image, micro‑text, QR codes of high security, tactile relief patterns and rainbow‑effect printing. It also introduces inclusive features, allowing holders to select gender identity (including a non‑binary option), self‑identify as indigenous or Afro‑Mexican, and provides tactile cues for visually‑impaired users. These changes aim to strengthen document authenticity, protect personal data and broaden accessibility while continuing to serve as the official ID for voting.
