Mexico's INE approves Somos México party as new national contender

Mexico's Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) unanimously approved the creation of two new national parties: Paz, openly supportive of President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Somos México, founded by opponents of the so‑called “Marea Rosa.” The institute also rejected registration for three other political associations due to procedural inconsistencies, penalising one for an attempted bribery of an INE official.

Leaders of Somos México, including Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo, announced they will appeal to the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) to defend the party’s name and its pink emblem, describing the INE’s restriction as illegal. The party aims to secure at least the 3 % of the national vote required for representation in the 2027 elections, positioning itself as an alternative to existing opposition symbols.
