Mexico's INE launches integrity commission, approves 2026‑27 election calendar
The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) created a permanent Commission of Verification of Integrity in Candidacies to screen prospective candidates for links to organized crime, corruption or illicit financing before they are registered. The commission, chaired by consejero Arturo Chávez López and joined by Norma Irene de la Cruz and Uuc‑kib Espadas, will receive information from the Fiscalía General de la República, the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera, the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia and the Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores. Its reviews are voluntary and advisory; they do not bind political parties or impose legal penalties.
The Council General of INE approved the commission with a vote of nine in favour and two or three against. In the same session the institute ratified the 2026‑2027 federal election calendar. The process will begin on 10 September 2026, with candidate registration scheduled for 22 March‑3 April 2027, campaign periods from 4 April to 2 June 2027, and the national election set for 6 June 2027. The calendar outlines more than 500 activities – 505 specific tasks across 153 projects – to organise the renewal of 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and thousands of local offices. Additionally, INE announced it will start compiling a voter registry for people deprived of liberty in September 2026, to issue identification cards for prison‑based voting.
