Mexico's INE keeps Sonora voting centers open during summer amid Quintana Roo protests

The National Electoral Institute (INE) announced that all 24 citizen service modules in Sonora – 11 fixed locations and 13 mobile units – will remain operational throughout the summer vacation period. The centers will continue to provide services such as first‑time voter ID issuance, address changes, document replacements and ID collection during their regular hours.

In the coastal community of Xcalak, Quintana Roo, residents have staged a protest refusing entry to political parties and candidates. They cite chronic neglect of basic services, including lack of a medical dispensary, prolonged power outages, security concerns and unaddressed sargassum accumulation. INE officials clarified that the institute’s legal role is limited to organizing elections, installing polling stations and overseeing resources, and it cannot compel elected officials to fulfill campaign promises. The INE will maintain coordination with local, state and federal authorities to ensure proper placement of voting centers.
