Mexico's INE launches new secure voting credential for 2026

The National Electoral Institute (INE) began issuing a redesigned Credencial para Votar on 1 June 2026. The new card incorporates QR codes, high‑security holograms, micro‑texts, special inks visible under ultraviolet light, an optically variable device over the photograph, and a tactile notch to help people with visual impairments identify the document. It also adds optional self‑identification fields for gender (including non‑binary), indigenous and Afro‑Mexican affiliation, which appear only if the holder requests them.

Production capacity is up to 90,000 cards per day, with the rollout announced in San Luis Potosí, Veracruz and Sonora. Existing credentials remain valid; the new version will be provided to citizens who renew, replace a lost or stolen card, update personal data, change address, or request the inclusive identifiers. The INE emphasized that the redesign strengthens authentication and aims to protect personal data while supporting the country's upcoming 2027 elections.

The institution will continue to issue the new cards gradually as people visit its citizen service modules across the country.
