Mexico's INE marks 36 years of institutional evolution

The National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico is commemorating 36 years since the formal establishment of its predecessor, the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), on October 11, 1990. The organization highlighted its institutional evolution through several key constitutional reforms.

Significant milestones mentioned include the 1993 reform, which added powers regarding election validity and oversight; the 1996 reform, which granted the institution constitutional autonomy; and the 2014 political-electoral reform. The latter expanded the INE's national responsibilities and strengthened coordination with local electoral bodies to ensure uniformity in electoral processes.

The INE reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, including legality, independence, impartiality, and the protection of citizens' political-electoral rights. The institute emphasized that these developments have allowed for the professionalization of technical and operational capacities necessary to organize federal elections and maintain the electoral roll.
