Mexico's INE orders Somos México to change name and logo

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has ordered the newly registered political party Somos México to change its name, logo, and official color by August 30. The INE's General Council determined in June that the name "Somos México" is not a neutral expression but rather carries semantic weight that suggests the party represents the entire nation.

Additionally, the INE prohibited the use of the initials "MX" in the party's emblem to prevent voter confusion regarding potential state support or institutional links. The use of "rosa mexicano" (Mexican pink) was also rejected due to its similarity to the colors used by a party with local registrations. While Somos México has appealed the decision to the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary, the party must comply with the changes unless the Tribunal issues a contrary ruling before the deadline.

Separately, the party faces scrutiny following the detention of its counselor, former governor Ernesto Ruffo, who is accused of leading an illegal hydrocarbon trade network. In response to calls for financial transparency, party leadership expressed openness to an audit by an independent commission regarding the resources used during its formation process.
