Mexico's INE sets 2027 election calendar and budget amid PRI-Moreno dispute
The National Electoral Institute (INE) approved an integral plan and calendar for the 2026‑2027 federal electoral process. The schedule launches on 10 September 2026, with the federal election for the 500 seats of the Chamber of Deputies set for 6 June 2027, alongside 17 gubernatorial contests and numerous local races. The institute will install 176 741 polling stations, up from 170 181 in 2024, and expects the voter register to exceed 102 million citizens.
To fund the expanded operation, the INE has requested a budget of 13.453 billion pesos for the 2027 election—a 54 % increase over the 8.715 billion pesos allocated in 2024. The total budget request for the entire 2027 electoral cycle is about 36.1 billion pesos, including precautionary funds for possible popular consultations.
Separately, the INE ordered PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas to remove social‑media posts that labeled the governing Morena party “narcopartido.” President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the decision as a defense of truthful political debate. The PRI has publicly challenged the ruling, vowing to continue using the term and accusing the institute of censorship.
