Mexico's INE seeks record 13.5 bn peso budget for 2027 federal election
The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) will ask the Chamber of Deputies for a total budget of about 36.1 billion pesos for the 2027 electoral cycle. The request includes a base operating budget, funding for the Cartera Institucional de Proyectos and a precautionary amount for a possible popular consultation. The cost of organizing the 2027 renewal of the federal Chamber of Deputies is projected at 13.453 billion pesos, a 35.2 percent increase over the 8.715 billion pesos spent in 2024. Councilor Uuc‑kib Espadas has formally proposed that the 2027 elections be conducted with two separate ballots, allowing voters to cast a direct vote for plurinominal deputies instead of the current indirect system. The proposal aims to give voters clearer choice and encourage parties to nominate stronger candidates.
The INE has also issued new guidelines to prevent the use of uncreased (“planchadas”) ballots, requiring district councils to detect and reject any ballots that lack the required folds before they are counted.
