Mexico's INE urges parties to vet candidates for 2027 election

The National Electoral Institute (INE) warned political parties that they must guarantee the integrity of their candidates ahead of the 2027 elections. A reform proposal would create a Commission of Verification of Integrity of Candidacies, an autonomous body under the INE composed of five electoral counselors, which could request information from the Financial Intelligence Unit and the Attorney General's Office to assess whether a candidate poses a reasonable risk of links to organized crime.

INE President Guadalupe Taddei stressed that the institute must remain neutral and not act as a judge of candidates, preserving the separation of functions between electoral administration and criminal prosecution. The evaluation process would be voluntary, leaving parties to decide whether to submit their entire candidate lists for review, and she called on parties to select democratic, law‑abiding candidates.
