Mexico's Ingenio San Francisco Ameca placed in bankruptcy proceedings

A federal judge in Jalisco declared the sugar mill Ingenio San Francisco Ameca to be in concurso mercantil, initiating a 185‑day conciliation process aimed at avoiding bankruptcy. The decision follows a creditor petition after the mill failed to respond to legal summons. While the 2025‑2026 harvest yielded over one million tons of cane and about 121,000 tons of sugar, the court ordered suspension of most debt payments, a halt to asset sales, and the appointment of a conciliator to assess liabilities and creditor claims.

The proceedings could lead to full bankruptcy if a settlement is not reached, threatening thousands of jobs and ancillary businesses that depend on the mill in the Valles region of Jalisco.
