Mexico's Internet Speed Lags Fixed Broadband but Soars for 2026 World Cup

Mexico's fixed broadband average speed of 104.3 Mbps places the country below the global average, according to a recent data report. The lag highlights the need for upgrades to the nation's wired internet infrastructure.

In contrast, mobile operators Telcel, AT&T and Altán deployed additional LTE and 5G equipment at 854 sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Temporary spectrum authorisation allowed upload speeds to jump from 9.45 Mbps to 30.98 Mbps (a 228 % increase) and download speeds from 14.09 Mbps to 37.36 Mbps (165 % increase) during matches in Mexico City, Jalisco and Nuevo León. The boost supported high‑definition streaming, digital ticketing and other fan services during the tournament.
