Mexico's Labor Party urges social‑media regulation to curb misinformation

Arcenio Ortega Lozano, the national commissioner of the Partido del Trabajo (PT) in Tamaulipas, warned that the absence of a legal framework for social‑media platforms allows false and unverified content to spread rapidly. He said platforms such as YouTube enable the circulation of news without source verification, creating “psychosis” among users. Ortega contrasted this with traditional media, which are subject to editorial standards and legal responsibility for their content.

He called for the creation of supervisory mechanisms to verify the authenticity of information posted online, including official communications, and suggested labeling requirements to help citizens identify the origin of posts. Ortega argued that unchecked misinformation could influence upcoming local and federal elections slated for 2027, and urged authorities to develop tools to limit the impact of unverified digital propaganda.
