Mexico’s Lázaro Cárdenas and Chile’s Iquique Ports Log Significant Cargo Gains in 2026

The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico recorded a total movement of 13,014,936 tonnes between January and May 2026, a 21% increase over the same period in 2025. Containerized cargo rose 20% to 6,470,052 tonnes, and the port handled 260,359 vehicles, of which 49% originated in China, 35% in Japan and 11% in South Korea. A total of 739 vessels were serviced, 60% of them container ships, and the port processed 1,143,555 TEUs, up 11% year‑on‑year.

In Chile, the Port of Iquique handled 324,347 tonnes of cargo in May 2026, a 4.72% rise from May 2025, with 34 vessels calling. The terminal moved 40,883 TEUs, including 22,056 inbound and 18,827 outbound. Notably, 81,071 tonnes of the cargo were linked to Bolivia—21,878 tonnes exported from the port and 59,193 tonnes imported—underscoring the port’s role in Andean trade logistics.
