Mexico's Minera Peñasquito settles labor dispute under USMCA mechanism
The Mexican labor authority (STPS) closed its investigation of Minera Peñasquito, a gold mine in Mazapil, Zacatecas, after the company agreed to a remediation plan under the USMCA Rapid Response Labor Mechanism. The original complaint alleged that three workers were dismissed because of their union activity.
STPS determined the dismissals were linked to an equipment breakdown, alleged material theft, and a sexual‑harassment accusation, not to union involvement. In response, Minera Peñasquito committed to a set of measures: publishing a Letter of Neutrality on union matters, issuing conduct guidelines for all staff, establishing a confidential reporting system, providing mandatory training on union freedom and collective bargaining, and holding dialogue tables with the union coordinated by STPS. The plan was coordinated with the United States government as part of the bilateral labor‑rights process.
