Mexico's Mobile Line Registration Deadline Threatens WhatsApp and Banking App Access

The Mexican government, through the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), has set June 30, 2026 as the final deadline for all mobile lines to be registered by linking the phone number to the user’s CURP. Lines that remain unregistered will be suspended, limiting calls, SMS and mobile data and leaving only emergency services available.

Tech experts explain that, although WhatsApp can function over Wi‑Fi, the app requires an active session and a verification code sent by SMS. If a suspended line is recycled to a new user, the original WhatsApp account may be closed automatically, causing loss of chats and contacts. The banking sector warns that many financial institutions rely on SMS codes for two‑factor authentication; without a registered line, customers could be unable to log into digital banking apps or authorize transfers. The Association of Banks of Mexico (ABM) noted that banks such as Santander and Plata have already warned clients of potential service disruptions.

Only about 52‑58 million of Mexico’s more than 144 million mobile lines have been linked to a CURP, leaving a large share of users exposed to possible digital isolation across messaging, e‑commerce, social media and government platforms.
