Mexico's mobile line registration lags as June 30 deadline looms

Mexico's telecommunications regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), reported that 58.38 million mobile lines have been linked to individual identities as of the June 9 cut‑off, representing roughly 37 % of the estimated 144 million active lines nationwide. The law mandates that all lines be linked by June 30, after which unlinked lines may be suspended until users complete the registration.

The pace of registrations has slowed; only about 6 million lines were added since the previous report, leaving an estimated 86 million lines still unlinked. Most mobile users—over 80 %—are on prepaid plans, which could exacerbate the economic impact of any mass suspensions. CRT officials have indicated no official extension will be granted, though internal discussions about a possible deadline adjustment are reported. Failure to meet the deadline could disrupt communications for millions, affect productivity, and raise legal and privacy concerns.

Stakeholders warn that a massive disconnection could harm the broader economy, prompting calls for a deadline extension to avoid widespread service interruptions and potential rights violations.
