Mexico's Morelia Airport Faces Route Uncertainty While $400M Invested in Tepic and Puerto Escondido Airports

The director of Morelia International Airport (AIM), Luis Raúl Benítez Cruz, said the future of Volaris flights to Ixtapa and Puerto Vallarta remains unconfirmed. The airline’s decision could determine whether the routes continue past October, although the airport has seen a 12 % passenger increase in June‑July 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, despite the World Cup not boosting traffic.

Aeropuertos Mexicanos (AME) announced a US$400 million investment to expand the international airports of Tepic and Puerto Escondido. The plan adds about 40,000 m² of new air‑side and land‑side infrastructure, with the first phase expected to finish in the first quarter of next year. AME projects the upgraded Puerto Escondido airport to handle 1.3 million passengers and Tepic around 500,000 shortly after opening. The same statement also referenced a parallel $350 million renovation of Saltillo International Airport.
