Mexico's CNA investigates professional football for monopoly practices
The Mexican National Antitrust Commission (CNA) has launched an official investigation (file IO-001-2026) into potential relative monopoly practices within the professional football market. The probe focuses on the affiliation, organization, and access to federated professional football competitions, as well as related services.
The investigation was prompted by media reports and complaints from fans regarding anti-competitive behaviors, specifically the suspension of the promotion and relegation system between Liga MX and the Liga de Expansión MX. While the CNA noted that the opening of the file does not imply guilt by Liga MX or the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), it aims to determine if market power is being abused to restrict competition.
The economic stakes are significant; the Mexican football industry generated over 52 billion pesos in 2024 and supports approximately 150,000 jobs. If the CNA proves violations of the Federal Economic Competition Law, responsible parties could face fines of up to 10 percent of their annual income and be required to correct or eliminate the offending practices. The initial investigation is expected to last between 30 and 120 business days, with the possibility of three extensions.
