Mexico's Omáwari Festival Showcases Indigenous Heritage Amid Growing Population

Mexico hosts the Omáwari Festival in Chihuahua, a two‑decade‑old event organized by the Secretaría de Cultura and the Ayuntamiento de Delicias. The festival features music, dance and crafts from Indigenous groups such as the Ralámuli Rojisópolki, Danza Matachín, Danza Purépecha and Danza Ézár, aiming to preserve and promote the cultural traditions of the country's 68 Indigenous peoples.

Across the Americas, Indigenous populations remain substantial: Mexico has nearly 26 million Indigenous residents, Brazil over 14 million, the United States more than 10 million, and sizable communities in Peru, Guatemala and Colombia. These groups continue to advocate for land rights, cultural preservation and environmental stewardship, influencing national policies and climate initiatives.
