PRI restructures in Sonora as PAN eyes Hermosillo mayoral race

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Sonora reorganized its municipal structures in the state's south. Party president Lupita Soto Holguín led the oath‑taking of new leaders in Rosario Tesopaco and San Ignacio Río Muerto, installing a municipal committee and a political council. Soto said the PRI’s future depends on grassroots engagement, noting that “the people are turning back to the PRI” amid growing dissatisfaction with Morena.

State leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Gildardo Real Ramírez, announced his intention to run for the mayoralty of Hermosillo in the 2027 elections. He highlighted the capital’s volatile voting history and the difficulty of forming a clear opposition alliance, as PAN, PRI and Movimiento Ciudadano negotiate their respective roles.

Within PAN, a slate led by Gloria Elena Garza Jiménez and César Augusto Verástegui Ostos appears to be winning the internal leadership contest, though opponents claim irregularities and could appeal to the national electoral authority. These developments reflect broader party maneuvering ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle in Sonora.
