Mexico's PAN pushes bill for climate-linked electricity subsidies

Deputy Ernesto Sánchez Rodríguez of the PAN introduced a reform to the Mexican electricity sector law that would create subsidised, preferential tariffs for households facing extreme climatic conditions. The proposal targets regions with prolonged heat, such as northern states and the southeastern state of Quintana Roo, where temperatures often exceed 33 °C with high humidity. It aims to cap rising electricity bills, which users report have jumped 40‑60% in the past three years, and to protect low‑ and middle‑income families from losing power during heat waves and the upcoming El Niño phenomenon. Proponents argue the measure will safeguard health, reduce economic strain on households, and support the tourism‑driven regional economy.
