Mexico's PAZ and Somos México Parties Criticized for Old Leadership

Two recently created political formations, PAZ and Somos México, are being presented as new options for the 2027 Mexican elections, but analysts say they are led by long‑time political figures. PAZ, formerly known as the Partido Encuentro Social (PES), intends to act as a satellite of the ruling Morena party, while Somos México positions itself as a frontal opposition but is populated by veteran politicians, former judges, ex‑ministers and businessmen linked to established networks.

The parties will receive public financing—73.6 million pesos for ordinary activities and additional funds for women’s promotion and media use—despite criticism that they offer no genuine renewal. Their emergence follows Morena’s setbacks in recent local elections in Coahuila, Veracruz and Durango, where the party failed to win any of the 16 contested seats.
