Mexico's President Sheinbaum Calls Cuba's Economic Opening a Major Change

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said the Cuban government’s decision to open its economy marks an “important change.” She praised the reforms approved by Cuba’s National Assembly, which aim to liberalise and decentralise sectors such as tourism, allow greater private and foreign investment, and enable the creation of state‑supervised private banks.

Sheinbaum added that Mexican entrepreneurs interested in these new opportunities can seek assistance from Mexico’s foreign ministry to establish contacts in Havana. The reforms were presented by Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and backed by President Miguel Díaz‑Canel as part of a response to the island’s deep economic crisis.

Sheinbaum’s remarks underscore Mexico’s willingness to support its private sector in exploring Cuban investment prospects while recognising the challenges facing Cuba’s economy.
