Mexico's President Sheinbaum Calls for Extradition of Officials Amid US Drug Trafficking Criticism

Chihuahua Governor María Eugenia “Maru” Campos urged President Claudia Sheinbaum to hand over several Mexican officials to the United States on drug‑trafficking conspiracy charges. Campos warned that failing to prosecute officials accused of ties to organized crime threatens the bilateral trade agreement and Mexico’s sovereignty. The appeal follows a U.S. Department of Justice indictment of Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya for collaborating with the Sinaloa Cartel to ship large quantities of narcotics into the United States.

President Sheinbaum, responding to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump that labeled Mexican cartels as controlling the country and described her as “good but scared,” called on Mexicans to be proud of their heritage. Speaking at a scholarship ceremony in Tijuana, she highlighted the nation’s historical achievements, indigenous contributions, and the significance of having a woman president. She also promoted the expansion of the Rita Cetina scholarship programme and urged parents to limit children’s screen time to protect their well‑being.
