Claudia Sheinbaum urges Pope Leon XIV to visit Mexico

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, met Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin at the Palacio Nacional. The high‑level dialogue focused on the Pope’s new encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which calls for ethical guidelines for artificial‑intelligence development, as well as on peace, disarmament and the restoration of historic temples.

Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s invitation to Pope Leon XIV, noting that the pontiff has expressed “many wishes” to come to the country. She explained that a papal visit cannot be scheduled during Mexico’s 2027 electoral period and that no date has yet been set. The Pope’s November 2026 Latin‑American tour will include Peru, Argentina and Uruguay, but Mexico is not on that itinerary. Sheinbaum said the government will continue to press the Vatican for a future visit.
