Mexico's Profeco launches consumer protection operation for World Cup 2026

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) in Mexico has rolled out a comprehensive consumer‑protection program ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. A special edition of the Revista del Consumidor was published with guidance on travel, accommodation, ticketing and avoiding fraud, and a digital portal (mundialsocial.profeco.gob.mx) offers price monitoring and rights information for both domestic and foreign visitors.

Profeco will install assistance modules inside each host stadium and deploy itinerant brigades at Fan Fest locations. Additional staff will be stationed at the Mexico City International Airport, Felipe Ángeles Airport, and the airports of Guadalajara and Monterrey. The agency has intensified price‑monitoring, checking over 274,000 products and conducting 488 verification visits, 95 % of which stemmed from consumer complaints. It placed more than 31,000 price tags on products lacking proper cost displays.

Pre‑emptive fraud‑prevention campaigns are being run in partnership with Meta, Concanaco Servytur and Amazon, and the consumer‑help line now features real‑time translation for tourists. Around 400 public servants have been trained in dispute resolution and consumer rights, and Profeco held 23 coordination meetings with hospitality, transport and retail chambers in key cities.
