Mexico's Profepa keeps seized lion in Matamoros and moves tiger to Tijuana zoo

A lion seized in Matamoros will remain at the UMA Ecopark wildlife facility rather than being sent to the Zoológico de Tamatán. Luis Eduardo García Reyes, vocal of the Tamaulipas Commission of Parks and Biodiversity, said the state agency never received a request to transfer the animal and that the federal environmental authority, Profepa, is handling its legal status. He emphasized that specialized spaces across the state allow rescued specimens to stay in appropriate care without needing relocation to the capital.

A tiger captured in San José del Cabo was transferred to the International Zoo of Tijuana. The move was coordinated by Profepa with assistance from Africam Safari, which provided a special containment cage, and Aeroméxico Cargo, which handled air transport. The zoo has the necessary authorizations to house large felines, and the animal will receive specialized care and monitoring.
