Mexico's Profepa orders halt to Yucatán 'Dunas' coastal development

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) placed temporary closure seals on the "Dunas" real‑estate project in Chuburná Puerto, Yucatán, after the development was accused of harming the coastal dune ecosystem. The project, which plans 74 apartments in six towers, a restaurant and other amenities on the first dune line, is considered vital for protecting the shoreline from hurricanes.

Movimiento Ciudadano filed a popular complaint demanding a permanent suspension, citing threats to 271 flora and fauna species, including the endangered hawksbill turtle and the colibrí tijereta. The party alleges violations of the Mexican Constitution, the Escazú Agreement, the San Salvador Protocol and several environmental statutes, and requests inspections, a technical impact assessment and a legal injunction to stop construction.
