Mexico's Profepa Seizes Illegal Python and Tarantulas in Wildlife Trafficking Crackdown

On July 17, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) seized a nearly four‑meter Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus) that was being exhibited by the Circo de Brasil in the municipality of Fresnillo, Zacatecas, after the circus failed to provide documentation proving the animal’s legal origin. The snake was transferred to a wildlife‑care facility for veterinary treatment while investigations into possible violations of Mexico’s wildlife‑protection laws continue.

The day before, following a tip from a parcel‑delivery company, Profepa inspected three shipments in San Luis Potosí and confiscated 59 live specimens, including two CITES‑listed tarantulas and dozens of queen ants intended for the domestic market and for export to Europe and Asia. The tarantulas were placed in a wildlife‑care installation, while the ants were released in a suitable habitat. Profepa has opened administrative proceedings against the individuals involved and reiterated its commitment to combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
