Mexico's PT Senators Propose Ban on TikTok for Minors

Senators from Mexico's Partido del Trabajo (PT) presented a point of agreement before the Comisión Permanente to prohibit minors from accessing short‑video platforms such as TikTok. The proposal, led by Senator Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez and supported by senators Geovanna Bañuelos, Liz Sánchez, Yeidckol Polevnsky and Ana Karen Hernández, calls on the Secretaría de Salud, the Secretaría de Educación Pública, the Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia and the Sistema Nacional de Protección Integral de Niñas, Niños y Adolescentes to issue warnings about the risks of excessive device use and to strengthen digital‑citizenship and health education in basic schools. The legislators argue that intensive use of short‑form video can impair concentration, memory, learning and sleep, and may increase anxiety, depression and other mental‑health issues among children and adolescents. They cite a study indicating that 75 % of Mexican teenagers use their phones continuously, with half responding instantly to notifications.
