Mexico's public insurer to boost retirement benefits for teachers and state workers
The Mexican government announced that a public insurer specializing in pension payments will guarantee a higher‑benefit retirement scheme for teachers and other public‑sector employees. The plan also involves strengthening the Pensionissste fund that manages state workers' pensions.
Governor Claudia Sheinbaum said the proposal was presented to the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE) and will be pushed forward, noting historic wage increases of 9‑10% over the past two years. She stressed that restoring pre‑2007 pension levels would require a larger public budget and referenced the Fondo de Pensiones para el Bienestar created by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Sheinbaum addressed ongoing CNTE protests near Mexico City’s Zócalo, affirming the government’s openness to dialogue, pledging no repression or evictions, and suggesting that some violent incidents are provocations rather than representative of teachers themselves.
